Ongoing Conservation Activities at Van Long
At Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh), a variety of forest conservation and wildlife protection activities are being implemented in a coordinated and effective manner. From collaborating with local authorities on land management, raising community awareness through outreach programs and hands-on experiences, to strictly monitoring violations of forest resources, all efforts demonstrate a continuous commitment to sustainable development and climate change mitigation.

1. Advisory Work and Coordination with Local Authorities

The Management Board of Van Long Nature Reserve actively fulfills its responsibility in protecting natural resources by coordinating with the People’s Committees of surrounding buffer-zone communes. This includes implementing land compensation and clearance programs, enforcing forest protection measures, monitoring forest fire prevention, and reviewing as well as renewing contracts with households assigned to forest protection. All these efforts ensure effective and sustainable forest management.

2. Community Awareness and Education

In addition to collaborating with local authorities, the Management Board promotes conservation awareness through community engagement. Key activities include three awareness-raising conferences, four mobile campaigns on forest fire prevention and conservation, and hands-on educational experiences for high school seniors at Nho Quan C High School. These initiatives effectively communicate practical conservation messages directly to the local community.

3. Strengthening Forest Management and Fire Prevention

Forest management and fire prevention at Van Long have been reinforced to safeguard forest resources and prevent serious violations. Cases of illegal logging, stone extraction, landslides, or unusual wildlife deaths are promptly detected and addressed. Fire prevention plans are implemented through coordinated efforts between rangers and local authorities, contributing to the long-term protection of the forest ecosystem.

4. Sustainable Forest Development and Climate Change Mitigation

Van Long actively engages in sustainable forest development linked to climate change adaptation. Activities include reforesting 1.42 hectares of replacement forest in Gia Lap (now Gia Van commune), assigning forest protection contracts to local residents, and monitoring invasive species such as water hyacinth. Unusual impacts from floods or storms on wetland forests are also reported in a timely manner.

5. Implementing Provincial Directives and Plans

The Management Board executes provincial directives and plans on reforestation, payment for forest environmental services, and eco-tourism development in protected forests. In collaboration with consulting units, they adjust zoning plans to ensure practical applicability and sustainable development of the reserve.

6. Promoting Responsible Ecosystem Development

Responsible ecosystem development at Van Long ensures a balance between humans and nature. Every action—from forest protection to the conservation of rare species and sustainable eco-tourism—contributes to biodiversity preservation and reinforces a collective responsibility for a green, harmonious, and sustainable Van Long for current and future generations.

7. Guidelines for Visitors to Protect Nature and Wildlife

Do not litter: Bring a trash bag and dispose of waste properly.

Do not feed animals: Feeding can harm their health and natural behavior.

Photography: Maintain a safe distance from wildlife and avoid using flash.

Minimize noise: Reduce disturbance to avoid scaring animals.

Do not exploit or trade wildlife or plants: These acts are illegal and can result in fines (up to 2 billion VND) or imprisonment (up to 15 years), while contributing to biodiversity loss.

Support conservation activities: Contribute to or participate in local initiatives such as awareness campaigns, volunteering, and supporting conservation organizations in Ninh Binh or across Vietnam.
